How It Works
I always inspire my students to look up new words in dictionaries. But I don’t ask them to just read a dictionary article (it’s for nerds like me), I ask them to find the real contexts in which these words exist. Because I believe the best way to learn a new word or an idiom or a set phrase is to learn it in the real existing context with good grammar. That’s why dictionary illustrations do this work perfectly.
However, despite the fact that now we neither have to go to the library to look up a new word nor we have to cover ourselves up with physical copies of Oxford and Macmillan, it’s still quite tedious to google new words and expressions. Yes, I know it’s just a few seconds but… It’s a few quite tedious seconds that might easily slide into minutes! Especially when you google a lot of different words during the day. Always typing in stupidity meaning, then press Enter and then scrolling to Oxford Dictionary, then Cambridge… Sometimes the search results do not match your needs. Sometimes Google shows Oxford first and Merriam-Webster second and sometimes vice versa. That’s so annoying… It would have been so much more comfortable if someone had combined all the disctionaries together and everything one would need to do was to type in the word in question… Wait! I think I know the way!
Contexto Creando does it swiftly and effectively! All you need to do is to enter the word you wish to find a context for and… voila! Here are the links to the dictionary articles of the word you need! No extra action needed! No extra words, no extra clicking or scrolling! Type in the word, press Enter and you have it all.
For the current version of Contexto Creando we’ve chosen the following dictionaries:
Oxford Dictionary. The hardest one to understand. Difficult but elaborate descriptions and quite advanced illustrations. Good choice for those who would like to go the hard way.
Cambridge Dictionary. A bit easier to understand. Best for checking the pronunciation and transcriptions.
Macmillan Dictionary. Ok.
Longman Dictionary. Easiest to understand. Good examples.
Merriam-Webster. For those who prefer American English.
Urban Dictionary. If you can’t find a word in any of the above, you will definitely find it there. All new slang words also can be found in Urban Dictionary.
Yandex Translate. For those who want to find a relevant translation with the dictionary articles . Russian is chosen by default.
Context Reverso. If you don’t need a definition of the word, you can go there and find lots of different contexts with translations. It also provides some dictionary articles in two languages which makes it very convenient indeed. When you go to Yandex Translate, Russian is chosen by default.
For Russian-speaking people there’s also one more feature in Contexto Creando – you can enter any word in Russian and get the links to Yandex Translate and Context Reverso automatically. Enjoy:)
P.S. I’ve added only the dictionaries I work with a lot every day. That’s why you may not find some of your favourite dictionaries or websites. But, if you can recommend me some other good dictionaries or web sources or if you have some questions or ideas you wish to share with me, you can reach out to me anytime at Telegram or send an email to my Support Team.
